The ESN MAS is designed for early career clinicians and is menat to accompany your neonatology specialty training. It is important that you have regular opportunities to treat very and extremely premature infants, otherwise you won’t be able to complete the practical tasks associated with the module content.
An ideal time to start would be:
- Last year of paediatrics, planning on specialising in neonatology immediately after, already working in NICU or similar
- During neonatology specialty training
- As a newly certified neonatologist
If you just started your paediatric residency, it is probably a little too early to apply for the ESN MAS. We look forward to receiving your application at a later date.
If you are quite experienced, e.g. work as a leading consultant, head of NICU department or similar, we would be very grateful if you encouraged your junior colleagues and residents to apply for the ESN MAS and supported them as their supervisor.
The ESN MAS is designed to accompany your neonatology residency, therefore the ideal time to start is somewhere around your transition from paediatric to neonatology residency.
However, timelines and curricula for neonatology training differ greatly across Europe, so if you think you might benefit from the programme despite your prolonged experience, do not hesitate to reach out so we can find a perfectly tailored solution for you.
Please fill out the application form to apply for the ESN MAS.
Within the application form, you will be asked to name a clinical supervisor who agrees to oversee your on-site training, provide regular feedback and support your education in the ESN MAS Programme. Please select an experienced neonatologist from your clinic for this role and get their consent to be contacted by the ESN during the review of your application.
No. All learning materials will be made available to you online. Lectures, discussions and tutoring sessions will be online, and you will complete your practical tasks on-site with your supervisor in the setting of your hospital.
The ESN admissions committee will carefully review your application. The ESN may ask you for a brief online interview to clarify uncertainties. You will be notified of your admission status, and if your application is successful, you will be admitted into the ESN MAS in Neonatology programme.
First of all: Congratulations! You have an exciting time ahead of you.
All materials yet available are stored on the online learning platform. Once you are enrolled in a specific module, you can find the materials in your ‘personal library’.
You will also be assigned an ESN tutor who schedules regular meetings with your group to discuss the content of the modules and your individual professional experiences regarding the topics of the respective modules.
The modules will be released continuously until the end of 2026. Once you are accepted and enrolled in the ESN MAS Programme, you will find all modules currently available on the online learning platform. There you can register for each module individually.
If you have completed coursework or training in neonatology or related fields at other recognised institutions, you may be eligible for credit transfer.
We will provide a link for you to submit a formal request, accompanied by official transcripts and course descriptions from your previous institution(s). Our academic team will carefully evaluate the content and comparability of the previous coursework to the MAS modules to determine the number of credits eligible for transfer.
The content of the previous coursework must align with the learning outcomes and competencies of the MAS in Neonatology modules and the previous education or training must have been completed within a specific timeframe, typically not exceeding five years from the date of application for recognition.
It is important to note that credit transfer decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration the specific learning outcomes and competencies of each MAS module. Please initiate the credit transfer process early in your academic journey to ensure timely completion of the programme.
For Supervisors
During the review of your trainee’s application, we will contact you and ask for confirmation of your trainee’s qualification as well as your willingness to participate in their academic journey. You will be required to sign an agreement document outlining the terms of collaboration between you and the ESN or your trainee.
Every six months you will receive online forms for documenting your trainee’s progress. You are expected to enable transfer tasks in the clinic and conduct at least 4 case discussions per year. You and your trainee will receive assignments from their ESN tutor which your trainee will complete self-responsibly under your supervision.
- Enabling transfer tasks in the clinic and supporting and supervising the trainee during the on-site completion of their assignments.
- Conducting at least 4 case discussions per year.
- Filling out a short online form about your trainee’s progress every six months on average.
Once your trainee’s application has been reviewed successfully, we will contact you and send you the Agreement document. The Agreement ensures that you, the ESN and your trainee all agree on what is your part in their academic journey and what is and isn’t expected from you as an ESN MAS Supervisor.
Unfortunately we cannot offer financial compensation for supervisors, but you will be part of a Europe-wide network of experts in neonatology and paediatrics, your trainee will gain invaluable insights in their speciality and together you will help shaping the pan-European future of neonatal education.
